How to Select a Tennis Bag

Tennis bags are essential for transporting your tennis racquets safely to and from your tennis matches. Tennis bags also have lots of special compartments that are ideal for holding extra clothes and shoes, overgrips, keys, wallets, cell phones, and other personal items.

When you are choosing a tennis bag, there are number of decisions to make. Modern tennis bags come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, styles and brands. In addition to the price and bag look and feel, you have to also consider the number of you racquets, the actual bag size, your way of transportation, and various bag features.

1. How many tennis racquets you need to carry in?

One of the most essential aspects in selecting a tennis bag is the highest number of tennis racquets you will need to carry in? Tennis bags come in five basic racket capacities: 1-pack, 3-pack, 6-pack, 9-pack and 12-pack. Tennis backpacks are usually for 1 or 2 racquets and have an opening for the handle of the racquet. If you are a serious competitor, you may need a bag that holds several racquets so that you can change string tension, grip or other features (during tournament or a practice) by simply grabbing a different racquet.

2. Where you travel to play and what is your form of transportation?

If you play mostly locally and you are a junior or recreational player you may consider the tennis backpacks or 3-pack bags. For most middle- or high-school players that mostly play local tournaments, the 6-pack bags are often the preferred choice. Though most bags are made to hold several racquets, some have added features designed for the tournament player on the road. If you have to travel around the country or internationally, there are some large bags some of which have wheels. Most models also offer padded shoulder straps that will make carrying the bags much more comfortable and they can be worn as a backpack to allow your hands to be free.

3. How serious you are about the sport?

If you are serious about tennis and you play competitively, you must invest in a bag with climate control technology that will protect your tennis racquets from damage and can preserve your string tension by isolating your racquets from moisture, cold or heat.

4. What is the best size for you?

Do not buy larger bag than you need or you can carry. You’ll need to feel and travel comfortably and keep your bag clean and well organized.

 5. Are there any additional features you may need?

You may also investigate some of the additional features that different models offer, like: adjustable padded shoulder or backpack straps, insulated racquet compartments, insulated food compartments, accessory compartments, ventilated wet/dry storage compartments for clothes, removable shoe bags, or anti-microbial shoe compartments.
